Macular Degeneration
What is Macular Degeneration?
Macular degeneration is a condition in which the layer of pigmented cells that supports the macula, the nerve found at the center of the retina that gives us our 20/20 vision, begins to show signs of wear and tear. With time small deposits begin to develop under the macula that not only decrease one’s vision but may allow blood vessels that normally reside behind the layer of pigmented cells to protrude through and become leaking. This is known as wet macular degeneration. The dry form has no bleeding. Use the provided Amsler grid to monitor your vision and notify your Eye Specialist immediately should changes occur.
HOW TO USE THE AMSLER GRID
1. Always use your reading glasses (or bifocals) while performing the test.
2. Hold the grid about 12-16 inches from your eyes where it is in best focus.
3. Check only one eye at a time, covering the opposite eye with the palm of your hand.
4. Look only at the center dot/square while checking your vision, and no where else.
5. Make a note of any changes (wavy lines, blank spots, ect…) to the squares and lines and report them to your eye
care specialist.
ADDITIONAL STRATEGIES TO PROTECT YOUR EYES
1. Avoid and/or stop smoking. This has been directly linked to macular degeneration progression.
2. Keep all follow up visits.
3. Always wear UV protective glasses while outdoors and/or hat.
4. Take the recommended vitamins – eye vitamins based on the AREDS I or II study (ICAPS or Ocuvite) or multi-
vitamin as directed. Do not combine a multi-vitamin with an eye vitamin without the expressed permission of primary
care physician.
5. Always check your Amsler grid weekly!!!
